Top Executives Gather for Closed-Door Roundtable on Rewiring Workforce Attitudes

A group of Australia's top HR executives gathered behind closed doors to have a different, and long overdue, conversation about workforce wellbeing.

Hosted by Appellon, the psych-tech platform trusted by the Royal Australian Navy, the UK NHS, and Australia's fastest growing aged care provider, Apollo Care Alliance, the event titled Executive Roundtable: The Human Performance Shift – From Old Metrics to New Mindsets, brought together senior leaders from Canva, Mastercard, Apollo Care Alliance, Ramsay Health, Unilever, and Coates Group to confront a hard truth:

The way we've been managing 'culture' is no longer working.

Why Should Organisations Care?

Because it's costing them. Not in theory — in real dollars.

Workforce attitudes are changing fast! And they are driving:

  • Chronic absenteeism
  • Quiet quitting
  • Burnout
  • Workers Compensation Claims
  • Lost productivity
  • Retention rates

"We've spent decades measuring how people feel — and we're still losing them."

— Sue Jauncey, CEO of Appellon

"It's not about engagement anymore. It's about changing attitudes. And if we don't understand them, we don't perform."

— Sue Jauncey, CEO of Appellon

Companies are spending millions on surveys and perks. Meanwhile, staff are disengaging, and cultures are quietly crumbling under the weight of ongoing stress and disconnection.

Engagement Scores And the Unintended Consequences!

This roundtable wasn't about minor tweaks or nicer wellbeing initiatives.

It was about tearing up the rulebook and asking:

What if engagement scores are no longer the solution — but part of the problem?

That's exactly what attendees explored.

Because when we build cultures focused on what we think will make our people happier by offering various perks, without addressing "root causes" for changing attitudes, we breed entitlement, dissatisfaction and expectation that personal needs are the priority to be met.

And we're seeing it everywhere — even inside our most admired organisations.

The New Mandate: Behaviour Over Sentiment

The roundtable tore up the rulebook, asking: What if engagement scores are part of the problem? Appellon's science-backed approach shifts the focus from "Are people happy?" to "Achievement and Connection, the two factors that boost wellbeing and satisfaction. Do you want your people to show up and feel good about what is collectively being achieved? Then we need to rethink and apply the psychological principles that promote wellbeing and a desire to collectively achieve performance outcomes! Key principles include:

  • Renormalisation: 10mins a week consuming psychologically back learnings will rewire attitudes, like the "Slip, Slop, Slap" campaign rewired sun safety.
  • Psychological Safety: Creating environments where personal judgments, desires and blame is reduced, and the desire to contribute, become personally accountable is the new trend.
  • Human Universals: The definition of Wellbeing is the degree to which a person feels like they have positively contributed in work and life. Contribution and participation is the new focus if you are seeking workforce wellbeing.
  • Cortisol to Oxytocin: Moving from stress (cortisol producing) to connection and achievement (oxytocin producing), provides the universal key to job satisfaction.

And the result? Organisations who use Appellon are seeing:

  • Significant cost reductions (We saved $308M in 12 months for the Royal Australian Navy)
  • Improved retention and recruitment (We saved reduced employee turnover to save £450K for the UK NHS)
  • Improved staff and residence wellbeing (We grew the wellbeing score to over 75% in just 5 months for Apollo Care Alliance and now enjoy consumption of learning content in the 90% + for all workforce)

A Final Message to Leaders

If you're still trying to understand workforce attitudes and behaviours by using older style engagement metrics and offering perks to keep staff happy — then it's time to rethink!

Change doesn't come from sentiment.

It comes from reframing attitudes.

The organisations that rise to the top in the next decade will be those that are prepared to challenge the narrative and lead with science-backed solutions that know how to address the root cause and reframe attitudes — and not try to measure views and opinions! Surveys are out and consumption is in!
